New Delhi, September 30:: Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars of the United States’ Smithsonian Institution conferred Woodrow Wilson Award for public service on Former President APJ Abdul Kalam. Ashok Kumar of Indianexpress.com talks to ‘People’s President’ on the occasion.

How will the N-deal change the face of India?

It is going to help our power sector. We need lots of power to keep the momentum of growth going to realize the dream of our more than one billion people.

Will it (N-deal) readily solve our energy problems?

It will not readily solve our energy problems. We need to tap other sources of power as well, like the renewable sources such as wind power, hydel-power, tidal power etc.

How can the youth be the participants in the growth of our country?

It needs a lot of vision. Though, participation of youth is happening but it requires more intensity.

How many more years will it take for us to join the league of developed nations?

By 2020 we will be a developed nation.

» Nuclear deal not to solve energy problem readily ...

As Nuclear department is with the Central Government, the chances of establishing new nuclear power stations in shortest time are good. Hydel projects are beset with unending state governments' benefit sharing squabbles as we saw of Kaveri , Krishna and Godavari and Narmada rivers and so on. Wind Power etc., are too tiny to be of much use. Then coal fired stations cause pollution and are demanding of logistics. We have to import quality coal. If nuclear power too is some how bogged in centre/state wheeling and dealing , then it is unfortunate. Time is of essence. As the hunger for more power is there, let us meet it with the now freely available nuclear option.

I am of the view that the nuclear deal is nothing but fool's paradise. At this juncture it is not to be given any priority as it is a clear mis appropriation of our country's hard earned resource. It may be noted that our actual power generation on installed capacity of about 1,32,330 mw as on 31.3.2007 (ref CEA)is less than 60%.If the capacity is increased by individual power station by tackling the operational problems, we'll easily get 10000 mw against the mere 5000 mw from the disputable nuclear plant, which will take 18 months or even more to install. This proves politicians with economic background don't possess any sense of time value of money and are poor decision makers in technical matters. Our greatest strength is the Renewable Energy especially bio-conversion process followed by wind and solar energy which remains a neglected area. By changing our energy mix also we can meet the challenges easily. We need a strong techno economic oriented leader like Dr.Kalam and not mere economists, who cannot even distinguish the pros and cons of projects.

Dr. Kalam is absolutely right! The solution provided by him about use of renewables is also perfect; however along with wind, tidal etc the concentrating solar power - CSP could well be the answer to generate utility-scale clean and green power in India. Please visit: www.desertec-india.org.in to understand India's potential to generate CSP that can quench the thirst of whole of South Asia as far as clean solar power is concerned.

I would like to say that N deal is very important for us not in way of energy but also in maintianing good relationship with other developed nations.

Even if it takes 20 years OK. Let us begin a good relationship with USA to replace Pak. which is tilting to China. What Nehru_indira could not achieve can be done thru this n-deal.

Better that personalities of past take off so that people of relevance for next generation would be able to understand, plan and execute actions that would shape and be able to deliver for the universe under practical circumstances.

How can india in a span of 12 year provide all the necessary infrastructure in the country as at par with the developed countries. Is this statement a Joke. Further we have so many other issues even our citizens in foreign countries are not treated with respect as that given to citizens of developed countries because we export human labour when will this stop and we are able to look after these people within our country. Only then can we have the respect of a developed nation

» Stable policies- sacrifice at the altar of democracy, or is it a myopia.

We need: 1) stable policies for at least 15 years, and that's it. Any policies formed usually get changed radically by the time new government comes in as it must find new priorities to keep the imagination of electorate up in skies, but shifting gear from one essential priority to another leads to no result for either or any of them.
