NC-Congress to contest in all council seats

Jammu: After sweeping the Rajya Sabha polls, NC-Congress coalition has decided to contest all the 11 legislative council seats in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, said, “We will contest all the seats of the legislative council.”

Sources said that NC is likely to put up its candidates on all the six seats of the upper house of state legislature while the Congress will contest the five others.

With election commission issuing the four notifications for the elections of the legislative council, which are being held in seven rounds, the coalition has the numbers to win ten seats.

Sources said that after the seat sharing agreement between the NC and Congress, the political parties will announce the names of the candidates who will fill nominations later. Other political parties were holding discussions over the number of candidates they will put up on the council seats.

State BJP President, Ashok Khajuria, said, “We have not decided as yet that on how many seats we will contest.” However in the council elections while the winning chances of BJP are remote, PDP has the numbers to win at least one seat. However with the ballot for the legislative council seats being secret, NC and Congress have decided to contest on all the seats of the upper house.

In fact there has been a new realignment of politics in Jammu and Kashmir which was witnessed during the voting for Rajya Sabha polls. In the elections to the Rajya Sabha seats, NC President, Farooq Abdullah, was even supported by the BJP, one of the BJP MLAs casted second preference vote in favour of the NC. However State BJP President, Ashok Khajuria, said, “Casting of a second preference vote was no issue.” He however said that the BJP has started inquiry into the matter.

On the elections to the three by-polls, NC-Congress coalition with the support of three of its allies, Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Front, Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Party Nationalist and CPI (M), have numbers to win the seats. Even on the seats which are reserved for Kargil and Leh, they have the numbers to win the seats. However for the six other seats, for which the elections are being held on two seats and four seats separately the NC-Congress coalition will require the support of independents and other MLAs to win the seats.
