Continuing the volley of words, finance minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday said senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley has “carefully avoided” the questions he had raised on Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s understanding of economic issues. He posed three questions for the BJP to clarify its stand on economic issues. “I expected Shri Arun Jaitley to rush to the defence of Shri Narendra Modi, and he has not disappointed me,” Chidambaram said in a statement.

January 27: Chidambaram told a foreign news channel that the amount of economics Modi knows can be written on the back of a postal stamp.

“What he (Modi) knows about economics can be written on the back of a postage stamp... He is in a learning process and I am sure he will learn very quickly” : Chidambaram

January 29: Jaitley attacked Chidambaram and said he thinks he is the “principal repository of all economic wisdom” even when the country’s growth story being turned into a “nightmare”.

“This statement (of Chidambaram) comes from a keen student of economics who can be credited with pushing India’s GDP growth to below 5 per cent” : Arun Jaitley

January 30: Chidambaram questions why Modi has till now not spoken on the fiscal deficit, current account deficit and monetary policy.

“Why do Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat oppose GST and prevent a consensus? Why did Shri Modi write to the PM opposing the Food Security Act? If Indian-owned multi-brand retail will not destroy jobs, how will FDI in multi-brand retail destroy jobs?” : P Chidambaram
