Days after he resigned as Maharashtra Industries minister raising a banner of revolt against Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, sulking Congress leader Narayan Rane Thursday met party vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

It is learnt he explained to the Congress second-in-command the rationale behind demanding a leadership change in the Assembly-poll bound state.

Rahul, sources close to Rane said, has assured the leader he would convey his sentiments to party president Sonia Gandhi. Chavan and state PCC president Manikrao Thakre are also reaching here on Friday for discussions with the high command. Rane told reporters after the meeting he has faith in the party chief.

Rane is finding himself in a tight spot as the Shiv Sena has already asked the BJP not to admit him, limiting his options - if he wants to explore any - outside the Congress. With the party refusing to replace Chavan, arguing it was too late to experiment now, Rane is hoping against hope.

He is likely to join Chavan and Thakre to meet Sonia where the party leaders feel a solution can be worked out. Rane has openly stated that Congress prospects in the Assembly elections would not be any different from the Lok Sabha polls if they were fought under the present leadership.

Sources said the party is thinking about replacing Thakre.
