The Kumbh Mela administration and the police on Friday prevented naga sadhu Swami Shayamanand Saraswati of Juna akhara from taking bhu-samadhi (living in a dug up pit, which will be covered with mud from the top without food, water or air).

The Swami had announced that he would perform the feat for nine days, beginning Friday morning around 11.15 am.

Addressing a press conference at the Kumbh Mela media centre, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP), A C Sharma said that the proposed act of the Swami fell into the category of somebody attempting to commit suicide.

“Such being the gravity of the proposed act, the administration was in no position to allow him to take bhu-samadhi,” said the DGP.

Talking about the issue of providing security to the VVIPs and VIPs, who are likely to reach Kumbh over the next fortnight, the Director General of Police said that the police had made all the arrangements to accord security to them, if they did not turn up on the main bathing day of Mauni Amavasya (February 10) and Basant Panchami (February 15), both of which will be a shahi snan day.

Sharma further said that checking of vehicles would be intensified from Saturday onwards in the run up to Mauni Amavasya.

“The policemen have been directed to check vehicles, irrespective of the position of the occupants. Therefore, people should cooperate when they are asked to stop their vehicle for checking,” he said, adding that even vehicle belonging to the Director General of Police could be checked, if need be.
