Bangalore: The monsoon session of the Karnataka legislative assembly began on Thursday with the opposition Congress training its guns on the ruling BJP over the recent communal violence in Mysore that left three people dead and several injured.

New leader of the opposition in the state assembly Siddaramaiah of the Congress who hails from the Mysore region set the ball rolling by tabling an adjournment motion for discussion on the Mysore violence and the government’s failure to prevent it.

The new opposition leader pointed out that a discussion is warranted, especially since tourism to Mysore had been affected by the communal violence and major events like the Dasara festivities are around the corner.

Siddaramaiah said the failure of the government to act effectively when clashes occurred in April had worsened the situation leading to renewed violence on July 2. The BJP-led government insisted it was ready for a discussion but not under an adjournment motion.

``We are ready for a discussion but after the question hour. The government stand’s is that a discussion is needed. But as the new opposition leader you must not make efforts to spoil the peace that has been brought to Mysore,’’ the chief minister said.

In the middle of the debate on whether the discussion on Mysore violence could be continued another BJP legislator from Mysore H S Shankarlinge Gowda accused Congress legislator Tanveer Sait from the troubled Narasimha Raja region of having a role in the violence.
