: Madhur Bhandarkar
Filmmaker
What does success mean to you?
I can define it in just one phrase — making more and more movies. It gives me a lot of power. I consider Chandini Bar as my first step on the ladder of success. But the tool to success, I believe, is having sufficient amount of money to survive and lead a normal and decent life.
What is your biggest strength?
Simply put — I, me and myself. It’s also the kind of experimental cinema that I have done. Fortunately, it also performed well commercially. After making movies like Corporate and Satta, I got the power to make more such cinema. But, as a film-maker I have found inspiration from Guru Dutt’s Kaagaz Ke Phool and Pyaasa.
What’s your stress buster?
I like reading a lot — it can be fiction, non-fiction, magazines…I also love to explore new destinations. And of course, watching comedy movies like Padosan, Satte Pe Satta and Peter Seller’s The Party. I also love meeting and interacting with people who are not really related to Bollywood — the non-filmy category — they have a lot to say.
God to you is...?
God is the ‘ultimate’. I find immense strength coming from Him. I’m a god-blessed child. I feel, at times, I can even talk to Him. Whenever I needed Him, I feel His presence. He is my soul mate. I can share my strengths and weaknesses with Him. For 11 years, I have been going to the Siddhivinayak temple on every Tuesday.
