Mumbai: Claiming that the strong showing by his three-year-old party in the Assembly polls showed that the Marathi cause was for real, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray said on Thursday that his MLAs would “control” the government in the legislature while he would continue to take to the streets for the sons-of-the-soil.

Thackeray was speaking hours after his party won 13 seats and made a strong debut in the Assembly, surpassing even its own internal estimates that gave the party around eight seats of the 143 it contested. Eleven of those 13 victories came from the Mumbai, Kalyan and Nashik regions, industrial belts with high migrant population and where the MNS’s identity politics have found strong favour with local Marathi youth. The party won one seat each in Pune and Aurangabad.

Thackeray said the people had reposed faith in him for taking up the Marathi cause and his MLAs would live up to it in the Assembly. “The Opposition failed for the last 10 years in the Assembly to play their role effectively. Now my 13 MLAs will show how the government has to be controlled by the Opposition in our own style. The results show that the Marathi cause is for real and there is support for us for taking up the issue,” he said. “My MLAs will raise these issues in the Assembly and I will be there on the streets.”

Asked about the personal campaign the Sena and the BJP ran against him, accusing him of covertly supporting the ruling Congress and NCP, Thackeray said it was time the Sena introspected as voters had shown who they favoured more. The good showing by the MNS would ensure it is recognised by the Election Commission as a regional party and also allotted the railway engine as its permanent symbol, MNS leaders said.

The MNS victories once again came as a surprise in many constituencies and upset popular predictions that had favoured strong Sena or BJP candidates. For instance, MNS general secretary Nitin Sardesai was the dark horse in the prestigious Mahim seat in Mumbai city where Marathi TV star Aadesh Bandekar was pitted against Sena-rebel Sada Sarvankar who joined the Congress after being denied the ticket. But Sardesai polled 48,734 votes and cruised to victory. Social worker and activist Ram Kadam trounced late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan’s daughter Poonam with a margin of 26,000 votes in Ghatkopar (West), a seat...

Raj is bringing up right issues, but his violent actions are wrong, the only best way to do good for marathi people is to give them better apportunities by educating them of thier rights, not by beating poor Biharis. i Hope raj does not walk on Narendra Modis footstep and escalete Marathi issues to creat riots in the State. The best option wil be to provide atleast 55% reservation to marathi people in government sectors.but then comes the big question(i am born and brought up in pune, speak marathi, love pune, but my surname is Gupta(not Bhosale or Jagtap)wil that job be fo me too???

Sir,Rise of MNS is to be viewed with great alarm. In the late 60's it was Shiv Sena which created havoc in Maharashtra. Now a new genie has come out of the bottle with similar ambitions. Their fundamentalist approaches will enable them to gain power. We need to ensure that it is checked ab initio.

Now that Raj Rachkrey has his hoodlums inside the Assembly, they will seize every opportunity to create lawlessness inside the assembly and since the present Govt. has only nourished MNS, they will keep quiet and to gain more and more popularity, MNS will become more destructive in its approach and common man in Mumbai will be worst sufferer. It is a pity that MNS hoodlums got elected instead of losing their deposits. Jai Ho democracy

Raj is following his Master (Bal Thackeray) foot steps and is sound in rhetoric and less on action. He is a hoodlum who is out to destroy the secular fabric of Mumbai and make it a hell. It is unfortunate that the electorate encourage such politicians like Raj and Bal Thackerays who are hell bent on dividing the society for their own mean ends.

Now, there. What does secular fabric mean in fact? Taking out of the locals to feed those who have nothing to lose, no take in anything local? Who take the first opportunity in declaring proudly that they are not Marathi and scoff at everything Marathi while still in their land? This was fostered by Congress and later the SS. Pathetic from all angles. All will pay up, you see. You are noted.

Going by the victory declaration of Mr.Raj Thackery, it seems he is bent upon continuing his hitherto avowed policy of regionalism which will turn out to be constant headache for the ruling combine if not controlled at the very beginning. MNS should not turn out be a Frankenstein Monster to Congress/Ncp combine. The picture emerging is not encouraging.

NOW THAT RAJ PROVED HIMSELF TO BE A SERIOUS CONTENDER FOR FUTURE, I HOPE HE AND HIS WORKERS RESORT TO VIOLENCE LESS AND LESS. BY RESORTING TO VIOLENCE A PARTY LOSES ITS CREDIBILITY AND INVITES CRITICISM. I HOPE HE CAN IMPROVE HIMSELF!
