Hundreds of people in Muzaffarnagar on Monday staged a dharna, demanding arrest of Merajuddin, a history-sheeter and general secretary of the district unit of the Samajwadi Party, who is an accused in a murder which took place on January 28, but is roaming around free, with a police guard to protect him.

People arrived in tractor trolleys and staged the dharna at Rajkhiya Inter College ground. A delegation also met SSP B B Singh and Additional District Magistrate Rajesh Kumar Srivastava and submitted a memorandum.

“They have assured us that within two days action would be taken in the murder case. We will wait for two days”, said Musa, a cousin of Mohammad Alam - who was shot dead in Tewara village under kakrauli police circle on January 28.

The ADM said besides arrest of Merajuddin, the protestors wanted his police gunner withdrawn. “I have forwarded their memorandum to the DM for action”, said Srivastava. SSP B B Singh could not be reached.

Merajuddin, also a native of Tewara, and six others were named in the FIR lodged by Alam’s mother Nafisa, who is village pradhan. However, none were arrested. The villagers then held a dharna, and the police promised to arrest the accused soon. However, there was no action in the case.

On Saturday, Merajuddin visited district office of the Samajwadi Party and participated in the monthly meeting of the party. The family of Alam has accused the police of shielding Merajuddin.
