Mumbai, May 5: The Mumbai Port Trust (MPT) has received response from 12 companies to its invitation for expression of onterest (EoI) for its proposal to develop a dedicated cruise terminal in the commercial capital.

Most of the companies are Europe-based. The MPT is currently evaluating the bids and will finalise the contract shortly. Work is expected to begin before the year-end and the cruise terminal will be commissioned by 2009.

The entire project will cost Rs 160 crore.

Currently, Mumbai is the base for India's first-ever luxury cruise service operated by Star Cruises from an MPT facility which is essentially a makeshift section of its container port. In 2005, the facility received 20 cruise liners. This year, it is expected to receive 28 cruise ships, MPT senior assistant docks manager Gautam Dey told FE .

Elaborating further on the proposal, Mr Dey said the terminal would be built one kilometre into the sea and the berth would be 200X50 meters in size. Two cruise vessels would be able to dock in the terminal, which would have to be dredged 10.5 meters.

Although the MPT has decided on the area of the Mumbai coastline it wants to develop for the proposed terminal, it is still open to relocating the project, if advised by the consultants who will be roped in to undertake the study of the area. At present, the proposal is to develop the area some distance away adjacent to the Gateway of India.
