The gangrape of 23-year-old photojournalist in Mumbai has shocked the country. The woman was allegedly gangraped by five men at around 8 PM on Thursday near Shakti Mills in Lower Parel area of the metropolis. Here are the reactions to the shocking incident in a city, which is considered to be relatively safer for women:
MoS for Home Affairs RPN Singh: It is extremely unfortunate and tragic...We have asked the state government for a detailed report and have directed Maharashtra government to take immediate action in arresting the culprits and mete out the harshest punishment."
BJP leader Smriti Zubin Irani: This is not an incident that has to be viewed in isolation. Every time such an incident occurs, representatives of government come out to give a sound byte to regret it but no action is taken. Till how long will we be quiet and mute spectator to rising crime against women,"
MNS chief Raj Thackeray: Patil is not competent enough to handle the Home portfolio efficiently. With such a person at the helm, the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated.
Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar: A new legislation was proposed in the Parliament few days after after the December 23 gangrape in Delhi. I hope the legislation will now be implemented in this case.
BJP leader Najma Heptullah: There is no fear of law in the minds of people because they don't get punished after committing such crimes. They get away with it.
BSP chief Mayawati: Social and even religious organisations should also come forward to make people join the awareness campaign. Efforts should be from all sides to curb such incidents.
Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut: Such a big incident of gangrape has happened in Mumbai. What is the government doing? What is the home department, police force, intelligence and vigilance department doing? Law and order in Mumbai, Pune and Maharashtra is in shambles. Women and even school girls are not safe anymore.
Congress MP Priya Dutt: It is extremely shocking. Mumbai is the city we have grown up in and never felt insecure...but definitely, there has been a change in circumstances.
