Motorists drive past parking facility, choose to leave vehicles on road
The commercial outlets in the parking facility, however, are running successfully and most slots are already occupied. The 11-storey parking lot has space for 28 commercial units on the first two floors.
“NDMC scrapped the surface parking on Baba Kharak Singh Marg two months ago, making it compulsory for people to park in multilevel automated parking. People park on road and this chokes the traffic on both sides of the road. On the other side is the HoHo bus stand, and the drivers also park on the Hanuman temple side. The traffic police failed to take action. Even the Enforcement department has failed to ensure implementation of the decision of the council, as it involves religious sentiments,” a senior official at NDMC said.
Joint CP (Traffic) Satyendra Garg said: “Free parking in the area was discontinued by NDMC. They wanted the traffic police to enforce the ‘no parking rule’. We suggested that the NDMC should first put proper signage in the area declaring the area a ‘no parking zone’. We also suggested that they should construct a bollard to deter people from parking. Proper barricading has to be put before we start prosecution for improperly parked vehicles.”
