Moily backtracks on no. of subsidised cylinders after poll panel’s reservations

Following the reservations expressed by the election commission on the timing of the move to hike the number of subsidised LPG cylinders to households to nine per year, petroleum minister M Veerappa Moily said that the government is yet to take a decision on this. The final decision willbe taken by the Union Cabinet, he said. In a written reply to the election commissioner’s letter, Moily said: “It has been consistent position of the ministry that review of the cap limit is under consideration of the government...The government is yet to take a decision.”
The minister was quoted as saying in an industry event on Tuesday that the government would increase the annual cap on the number of subsidised cooking gas cylinders from the current six to nine. The comments came at a time when the model code of conduct is in force in poll-bound Gujarat.
“Yesterday’s statement by me should not be taken as an announcement. It was in response to media queries,” Moily clarified in a press conference.
