London: A signed black and white photograph of ‘The Jackson Five’ sold for nearly three times its pre-sale estimate at Christie’s, the first sale of Michael Jackson memorabilia at a major auction house since the pop singer’s death last week.
The 25.5 x 20.5 cm photograph went under the hammer for £1,625 (Rs 1.28 lakh) in comparison to its estimate of 400-600 pounds at a sale of pop and rock memorabilia on July 1.
The Jackson Five comprised brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael. They began playing at local clubs in 1962, with Michael as lead vocalist.
The photograph was inscribed in red felt pen, “Your (sic) a real professional and I like it Love Michael Jackson, 79 Tour, friends for life; To Jeffrey Best Luck and thanks for everything and I’ll see you next year 1979 Love Marlon Jackson; Peace & Love Jackie Jackson; To Jeffrey Thank you for all your help I’ll love you always Love Randy Jackson and To Jeffrey Thank you and I’ll be looking forward to working with you again Love you Tito (Jackson).”
Combining dance routines influenced by the Temptations with music inspired by James Brown, they first recorded for the Indiana-based Steeltown label before auditioning for Motown Records in 1968.
