Missing for 3 days, former Xavier’s student found dead in canal

The body of a 22-year-old, who was missing since September 10, was found today in a canal near GJ Khan Road under Tiljala police station in south Kolkata.

Arijit Ghosh, a resident of 3/G Palm Avenue, had studied at St Xavier’s College and was looking for a job. He was last seen leaving his home for a job interview at Camac Street.

“Later, one of his friends called up and said Arijit would return a bit late because he was supposed to attend a farewell of that friend,” said a family member. “When he did not return till 11 pm, we called him up and he said he would be home in 15 minutes. After that the phone was switched off and we could not trace him.”

This morning, the family received a call from Tiljala police station saying a body had been found from the canal. The relatives identified it as Arijit’s body.

Tiljala police officials are looking into several aspects of the case. Where did Arjiti vanish after saying he would be home in 15 minutes? How and why did he reach the south Kolkata locality?

“We are looking for the friend whose party Arijit went to attend. Tracing the mobile towers, it was found that he was around Theatre Road at 11 pm that day.
