SummaryWeatherman has predicted a wet New Year’s eve for the national capital.

Cold winds over Delhi brought down temperatures two degrees below normal on Thursday. The Met department has attributed the clear skies to a western disturbance that occurred over western Himalayan region from December 21 onwards, bringing rain and snowfall at most areas in Jammu & Kashmir on December 22 and 24, and in Himachal Pradesh on December 22 and 23.

The real winter chill and dense fog days, as predicted by the Met department, will hit the region in the new year.

The maximum temperature on Friday is expected to be at 20.6 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will dip to 6.2 degrees, two notches below the normal. Humidity levels oscillated between 94 to 43 per cent, while shallow fog is expected in the morning.

The Met department has further predicted a fresh western disturbance to affect the western Himalayan region and adjoining plains starting Sunday, December 29. This is likely to lead to rain and snowfall in areas of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on December 30 and 31.

For Delhi and NCR, the weatherman has predicted a wet New Year’s eve.

“Delhi and NCR, which has been experiencing pleasant weather since Christmas eve, will experience a spell of rain or thundershowers between December 30 and 31,” Dr O P Singh, deputy director general of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, said.

Yet another western disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayan region in the first week of January, with more rain and snow in the upper Himalayan regions, and likelihood of light rainfall in Delhi and NCR.

“After passage of this system, moderate to dense fog (visibility less than 500 metres) would occur at many places over Punjab, Haryana, Northern Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. This could also lead to drop in minimum temperatures over Northwest India,” Dr Singh said.
