Maruti Launches Alto Variant
The variant is Rs 35,000 less expensive than the existing base model, Alto LX, says a release. The non-A/C Euro I variant of the Maruti’s flagship model costs Rs 1.87 lakh, which is sold in cities, other than the four metros, while the Euro II non-A/C model has a price-tag of Rs 2.07 lakh sold in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. An air-conditioned Maruti 800 costs Rs 2.27 lakh.
The Alto was the country’s fastest growing model in the A2 (compact car) segment in 2003-04, growing by a whopping 135 per cent, the release adds. A total of 60,629 Alto vehicles were sold in the domestic market during the year.
Refuting speculation about the fact that the Maruti 800 may be discontinued, a Maruti official said that there were no plans to phase-out the model. “We have great plans for it. It has grown by 17 per cent last year,” he said.
Exports of the Alto also increased to 36,436 units during 2003-04, up from 23,869 units in 2002-03, a growth of 53 per cent. The new variant comes with the provision for retro-fitment of an air-conditioner.
