Man gets one-yr jail, Rs 3.62 lakh penalty for electricity theft

The Special Court of Electricity at Karkardooma has convicted an IP Extension resident of power theft. The convict, Sri Chand Jain, had earlier filed a PIL on “fast running meters and high bills” in the High Court on November 8.

In an order announced in an open court on January 24, the Special Court sentenced Jain, a resident of New Surya Kiran Apartments in IP Extension, to one-year simple imprisonment (SI) and also levied upon him a civil liability of Rs 3.62 lakh. Jain was convicted of stealing 11.5 kW of electricity for industrial purposes.

“The complainant was found committing direct theft of electricity without any justified reasons for industrial purposes. In my considered view, it is a serious offence of theft of electricity committed by the convict,” read the order of the Additional Sessions Judge, Special Court of Electricity, Karkardooma, Dr Shahabuddin.

“The total connected load at the premises of the convict was found to the extent of 11.5 kW at the time of inspection and this fact is also not disputed by the convict... On the basis of applicable tariff of theft, the bill coupled with the connected load and making the calculation as per provisions of Section 154 (5) of the Act, I am of the considered view that the civil liability amount against the convict comes to the extent of Rs 3,62,850,” the order says.
