Lalitesh Katragadda, Google’s country manager (products) in India and the man behind Google Mapmaker, has quit after 12 years with the internet giant. Katragadda, who started Google’s R&D centre in Bangalore, told FE that he has not decided on his next move and is considering various options.

Katragadda, 44, had joined Google in 2002 when it acquired his San Francisco-based start-up Sphereo. He later moved to Bangalore to set up Google’s India operations.

“It was a personal decision. Tuesday was the last day at office,” Katragadda said, adding that his friends Rajan Anandan (Google India MD) and Sandeep Menon (Google India’s marketing director) had kind words for him and the office organised a send off.

“Sometimes you have to shake things a bit. There are some things you cannot do inside a large corporation,” said Katragadda, who has a Phd in robotics from Carnegie Mellon University. “Google has its constraints and advantages. And there are many ways in which to make technology work for a billion Indians. Sometimes it is good to work outside large corporations.”
