Mamata trying to get DD telecast rights for T20 WC

Kolkata: Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken initiative to ensure that cricket fans in India could watch all Twenty20 ICC World Cup matches in UK which is being telecast on ESPN Star Sports (ESS).

"Mamata will make efforts to ensure that the T20 is seen by everybody in India," said senior Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee.

As of now, Doordarshan is scheduled to telecast matches from the semi-finals stage onwards. Chatterjee said that the Trinamool Congress chief had sent him to Delhi yesterday to talk to the I&B Ministry Secretary Jawahar Sarkar.

"I spoke to Sarkar yesterday and conveyed Mamata's concern to ensure that cricket fans all over the country can see the T20 World Championship on Doordarshan."

Defending champions India will take on Bangladesh tonight to begin their campaign in the second edition of the ICC World Twenty20. The T20 World championship is being held in England with the final scheduled on June 21.

What? Why did not Mamta wait till the India-Bangladesh match started to make this declaration.BTW, If DD indeed has such a large viwership, why isnt DD paying the big bucks and taking the contract - afterall this medium would be most attractive for the sponsors and advertisers too. Or is the case of a spoilt child - Mummy will get me everything.Hey, Is Mamta the Information and Broadcasting Minister? Maybe next she can offer to solve the Kashmir issue too.
