Mamata’s appointee to STM lands herself in ethical row
Bose signed the treatment sheets of two patients undergoing stem cell therapy at the STM on August 3 violating the rules of the Medical Council of India as doctors can only sign the treatment sheet of patients where they are officially appointed. Till date, Bose is the head of the pathology department at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital. As a result, she cannot sign treatment sheets of patients admitted to the STM. As per the rules, Niranjan Bhattacharya, who is the head of the regenerative medicine can only sign treatment sheets for the STM patients. Before any stem cell therapy is being conducted,it should get approval from the director or the ethical committee that has been formed to monitor the works of the regenerative medicine department.
The incumbent director of the STM, Krishnanghsu Roy, has termed Bose’s action unethical. “We have informed the matter to the director of medical education in this regard,” he added.
Director of Medical Education Susanta Banerjee, however, did not confirm whether he has received any complaint or not, and said: “I will inform the matter to the concerned person.”
