It is nearly a year since the multi-layered MPPEB scam came to light in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh. From the waiting list, students who could have taken up a medical course but forced to follow alternative courses; from the admission rolls, students expelled on suspicion of cheating, here are the range and impact of the scam:

1. MBBS students from neighbouring states — they were called “scorers” — would be engaged as impersonators for weak students from MP. Seating arrangements inside the hall would be adjusted to ensure that the “scorer” sat next to the student who copied the answers.

2. The scam surfaced last year but such impersonation is suspected to have gone on for years. This is the ground for cancelling the admission of several medical students after sets of them were found to have given identical answers in entrance tests between 2008 and 2011, though the students call it a coincidence.

3. Besides impersonation, another way involved students paying a bribe and then leaving the OMR answer sheets partially blank. These would then be filled later at MP Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) headquarters.

4. What began as a Pre-Medical Test scam later turned out to be one that involved various other recruitment exams under the MPPEB. Allegations made against the RSS have been in connection with recruitment rather than with medical admission.
