: The government appeared to have understood the serious impact of skill shortage in the country. Creating a pool of skilled personnel will be the government’s main thrust, reveals the Economic Survey 2007-08. The move will certainly go a long way in catering the needs of the various sectors.

The government believes that on one hand such an effort would increase employment and, on the other hand, will help reduce the dependency ratio and give the nation a competitive edge. The government aims to reduce dependency ratio to 0.59 by 2011, from 0.73 in 2001.

Dependency ratio is a ratio of dependent to working age population. The government has already proposed to set up ITIs with public-private partnership across the country.

It will, through Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), will now focus on reducing primary schools dropouts as well as improving quality of student learning.
