WHILE the film industry was busy debating India’s official entry to the 86th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category, an independent Indian feature, titled Ballad of Rustom, has made it to the Oscars Reminder List in the Best Picture category on Monday. This list has 289 films in total and is the first round of shortlisting before the final nominations are announced on January 16.
Directed by Ajita Suchitra Veera, the Hindi film revolves around a telephone lineman in unnamed countryside. An honest and innovative man who attempts scientific experiments in his free time, he has to deal with a difficult boss but his fantastical life brings him reprieve.
Shot on 35mm — a rarity for independent films — Ballad of Rustom was independently submitted by Veera to the Academy. “It’s a unique film that we shot on 35mm for aesthetic reasons. It’s languidly paced and captures a very different life from what we’re used to in cities,” said the director.
It features alongside films such as Gravity and Blue Jasmine in the Reminder List. Kamasutra 3D is also part of the list.
