Bhopal, Patna: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan did a Raj Thackeray when he said that jobs in the state should not be allowed to be taken away by Biharis, evoking sharp condemnation from Bihar leaders Lalu Yadav and Ram Vilas Paswan.
“Locals should be given preference in employment in the industries being set up in the state. It should not happen that people should come from outside...Bihar and get the jobs here,” Chouhan said, addressing a function at Satna in the BJP-ruled state.
Former Bihar chief minister Lalu Yadav lashed out at Chouhan’s remarks calling him “unstable” and demanded that he tender an apology. The remarks are unconstitutional and the chief minister has taken a wrong step, Lalu said, wondering why Biharis are always targeted when the issue of jobs comes up outside their state.
AICC spokesman Manish Tiwari said it was irresponsible on the part of Chouhan to have made the remarks. “The Constitution is very clear, any citizen has the right to settle anywhere in the country and can work. No government in the country,or any individual is above the Constitution,” he said.
MNS chief Raj Thackeray had spearheaded a campaign against north Indians in Maharashtra, pitching for a “sons of the soil” policy, inviting widespread criticism.
