Local train tickets to cost more from Jan 1

From January 1, Western and Central railways will increase the surcharge levied on suburban railway tickets from 8 per cent to 24 per cent. The surcharge is being levied to return the World Bank loan taken for the Mumbai Urban Transport Project phases 1 and 2. Surcharge on the ticket for a second class ticket will increase from Re 1 to Rs 3 and on first class ticket from Rs 2 to Rs 6. For monthly and quartely pass, the increase could be between Rs 20 and Rs 80.

Man held for stealing diamonds from kin

DB Marg police Thursday arrested the nephew of a diamond merchant for allegedly stealing diamonds worth Rs 1.04 crore from his office in September. Cops said the accused, Prakash Doshi, has been working at his uncle Bipin Doshi’s office at Opera House as an assistant. “We suspected Prakash as he had access to both the safe in the office and the CCTV camera control console. After questioning, he confessed to the crime,” police said.

Fast-track trial in lawyer murder case

Four months after lawyer Pallavi Purkayashtha was brutally attacked and murdered, allegedly by her building security guard, the case has been assigned for a fast-track trial before a Sewree court. Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam has been appointed in the case. The case is scheduled to come up for hearing on January 5, when charges are likely to be framed in the case.
