SummaryThere is also the risk that the pumping in a mixture of water and chemicals could contaminate underground aquifers.

Apropos of the article ďStep on the gas with shaleĒ (FE, September 6), shale gas as an energy solution does look very attractive but there are several issues. For a water-stressed country like India, the amount of water required for the process of hydraulic fracturing or fracking is prohibitive. There is also the risk that the pumping in a mixture of water and chemicals could contaminate underground aquifers. The pumped out water will also contain dissolved methane gas, contributing to overall greenhouse gas load. Another factor is the absence of gas pipeline in the country where the shale gas deposits have been identified. Why some of the Indian private sector companies have invested in shale gas in US by passing India merits detailed analysis.
