Stamp the “sell-by” date
Apropos of the editorial “Saving MTNL and BSNL” (FE, October 30), it took perhaps an aeon for the government to desist from running hotels and bakeries. In heavy industries, except for PSU steel plants surviving on China’s huge appetite, others have run to rust. The government seeded industrial growth at the turn of Independence. Now, it must learn to withdraw in time for more efficient private enterprise to bear the onus. Telecom PSUs sharing/leasing spectrum will be no different. It would only provide oxygen for some more time but not enable them to get up and be on their own. Have we not seen Air India sink deeper on a daily basis? The government must put a “sell-by” date on its unviable manufacturing/service entities and realise good value before takers become scarce. A sagacious and planned sell-off will safeguard the interests of the employees too.
