: In the Emerging Markets Forum 2009 meeting, think-tanks debated whether India can post higher GDP growth than China. Although answers were mostly in the positive, one question remains: would India’s current policies help poverty alleviation, especially in rural areas? The decreasing share of the agricultural sector in GDP is more often discussed than the opportunities created for small entrepreneurs in rural India. Shouldn’t new economic reforms be centered on rural India? Why initiatives like the PM Gramin Sadak Yojana, which helped develop infrastructure, are unpopular? What about electricity, safe drinking water? Could industries be set up without the availability of them? These are the questions imaginative people should ask.
