: One of the fundamental weaknesses of India’s present educational system is that it does not encourage abstract thinking as it evaluates students based on their ability to recollect rather than their ability to contribute (‘More choice, minister’, Jun 27). This has been responsible for India’s lower level contribution to inventions and discoveries. The need for India is to replicate our success in the information technology field in other sectors. That is possible only by encouraging research on subjects like development of alternative energy resources, irrigation methods, etc. The education system should facilitate such processes, as the economic success of a populous country like India can be possible with an active facilitation of them.
