



New Delhi, August 26:: Six of the 36 meteorological sub-divisions have received deficit monsoon rains this season with Marathwada recording almost half of the normal rain falls till now, the weather office has said.
The country, on the whole, has received one per cent less rainfall than the average for the southwest monsoon season, the India Meteorological Department said.
While Marathwada recorded 44 per cent less rainfall than the long period average till August 24, Kerala received 31 per cent deficit rains during the south-west monsoon season.
Northeastern states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura received 28 per cent less rainfall than the Long Period Average (LPA), the weather office said, adding north interior Karnataka (-27), Assam and Meghalaya (-21) and Vidarbha (-20) also received less downpour.
Meteorological analysis and numerical weather prediction models suggest sub-dued rainfall activity over northwest and central India over the next five to seven days, it said.
The weathermen has forecast widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy falls during the next four to five days over northeastern states, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Bihar.
Good rains are expected over extreme south peninsula, particularly over Tamil Nadu and Kerala beginning from Wednesday and continuing for the next two to three days.
Central India has received 698.4 mm rains between June 1 and August 24 which is seven per cent below the LPA, South Peninsula got 497.6 mm rains (-6 per cent) and Northeast India 1016.8 mm (- 5 per cent).
Northwest region received 545.7 mm rains, which was 19 per cent more than the LPA.
