Left teachers’ union questions govt over RTE conundrum

The Left Front-backed primary teachers’ association — All Bengal Primary Teachers’ Association (ABPTA) — on Wednesday criticised the Trinamool Congress government for not putting in place adequate infrastructure to implement Right To Education (RTE).

“The state government does not give any importance to teachers’ and students’ interests. We know that all the teachers in Bengal need to complete their training by March 2015, as per the RTE Act. But the fate of about 75,000 primary teachers, who are yet to be admitted in the training course, hangs in balance. Moreover, the state government does not have the resource to train 75,000 primary teachers by March 2015,” said Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Suryakanta Mishra at a public meeting of ABPTA on Wednesday.

The CPM leader also questioned the government’s willingness to implement the Act, which enables free and compulsory eduction to children in the age group of 6-14 years. “What will happen by only framing laws if there is no political will to implement it? The Trinamool government does not have the infrastructure and the resources to implement it,” he added.

Agitate or you won’t achieve anything: Bose to teachers

With primary school teachers opposing the West Bengal Education Department’s directive that students should not take books home and complete studies during school hours, Left Front Chairman Biman Bose on Wednesday asked them to agitate. “I ask you to agitate, you will not achieve anything without resorting to agitation,” Bose told a rally of primary teachers here.
