BJP leader Laxmi Kanta Chawla today wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh expressing concern over “honour bestowed upon terrorists in Punjab”.

In her letter, Chawla pointed out the honour bestowed by Sikh organisations on the brother of Beant Singh assassin Dilawar Singh at Golden Temple on Sunday. The Sikh organisations had demanded installation of portrait of Dilawar, the human bomb who assassinated Beant Singh, at World Sikh Museum and had sought directions from Akal Takht to SGPC in that regard. Another demand was to celebrate the death anniversary of Dilawar on the lines of those celebrated for assassins of Indira Gandhi and Gen A S Vaidya.

“On August 31, the families of Beant Singh’s killers were honoured. They were termed as martyrs. Under the nose of government, anti-India slogans were raised. It was also demanded that the photo of these killers be put in the museum. It must be in your notice that I have already written that some time films like Kaum de Heere is made to honour the terrorists and now film on the assassins on Gen Vaidya is being made to highlight the act of killers. The killers of Indira Gandhi, Gen Vaidya and Beant Singh are honoured in Punjab,” Chawla wrote in the letter.

She also claimed: “Religious functions are held in the memory of terrorists by calling them martyrs. This is a planned conspiracy to disturb the peace and harmony in Punjab. It should be stopped at the earliest. The sad part is that many such programs are held at prominent religious places and it is not in the hands of administrators of such institutions to stop such programs.”

“I am failing to understand under what compulsion the Punjab government is not being able to check such activities.,” Chawla added.
