Johannesburg: VVS Laxman was told that Deccan Chargers did not need him in the playing XI for the Indian Premier League's later half but he stayed on to contribute his experience and knowledge after being requested, skipper Adam Gilchrist has revealed.

Gilchrist said his predecessor "went through a lot emotionally" after the team's captaincy was taken away from him.

"VVS Laxman went through a lot obviously emotionally as he had the captaincy taken away from him and he has been here and played just five games. We told him that we did not need him in the end of the tournament. But we wanted him to contribute - his vast knowledge, experience," Gilchrist said after his underdog team lifted the IPL trophy on Sunday night following a narrow six-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"He has worked with our fitness trainer, fielding coach and Darren as our head coach. So, that is exciting to see that VVS epitomises what the franchise has been this year," he added.

Gilchrist said competing in the IPL has given players, especially the Indians, good practice ahead of the Twenty20 World Championships in England next month.

"Obviously, India is the only national team, that had every member of their T20 World Cup squad playing in this tournament. That's an advantage," he said.

"I can't wait to watch, it's going to be interesting to see, how it goes. Having been in Twenty20 mode, that's going to help a lot of the players," he added.

We cannot blame Gilchrist or any other foreign player for this comment as we don't respect our Legends like OUR Very Very Special Laxman.Deccan Chargers officals should have to think about it earlier but they didn't and Gilly won the tournment and thinks that i can make any statement on anybody and no one will tell anything to me

It is very sad and an insult to a local sports person.Lakshman had save the face of India many occasions and even in recent series .Deccan Chargers management should rethink of their decision.Gilchrist is no doubt a superb player but this doesnt mean to insult an Indian Legend. Instead of Symonds Lakshman had to be picked. One should also consider the behaviour aslo. Symonds started bad mouthing the RCB's batsmen Pandey.Look at RCB they have changed the captancy but didnt disregard Dravid. Its high time for Deccan Charger's Mgmt to seriously rethink in Lakshman case

IPL cricket carries an international tag,so aptly graced by overseas players. Allowing guests to take the best seats in the house is an indian tradition,we should be proud of and VVS himself obviously savoured the Deccan victory.

Laxman should have come back instead of staying back where he was not required. Shame on deccan chargers for looking down at a legend. Also can deccan chargers kick out rouge players like symonds. It was disgusting to see the rouge player sledging a kid like manish pandey. Symonds is a rouge player and will be a rouge player. Strange deccan chargers give respect to a rouge player but look down at a legend like laxman. Laxman should quite deccan chargers immediately

it was a known fact that vvs Laxman can not fit in this type of game why then to select him in the first place!!the same goes to dravid.

Gilly spoke like a true westerner, with no regard to VVS's feelings. There was no need to make that comment atleast not in the way it was made. The fig leaf offered to VVS hardly hides anything. Mallya blows chunks, ask him what happened to UBICS Inc. in the US? He is a failure and hence he has no right to treat Indians (VVS) the way he does when they fail.

VVS the person who chose to have Gilchrist and Symonds knowing their potential. Unfortunately Deccan was last in 2008 IPL. This year Deccan are the champions. Laxman's role in 2009 was neglible since he has failed in four inings he played. It does not mean that his services are not needed. He is the player who has won and saved so many matches for India. Just like old stalwarts, he will also succeed in 2010. Please do not humiliate him. He is a GREAT PLAYER,

Typical Aussie mentality. Why cudn't Gillie tell this bfore completion of this IPL? I mean exactly whn the decision was taken. He shud understand that laxman is frm HYD and expelling (sort of) frm the team shud not b discussed in public like this causing more humiliation to Laxman.
