The Vishwanathapura police have arrested a group of 22 associated with Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), including its Bangalore rural district president Ambarish Gowda, for alleged extortion. They said the KRV members tried to extort money from truck drivers illegally transporting filtered sand at Thailagere village near Devanahalli on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday night.

The accused have been booked for extortion, assault and criminal intimidation and remanded in judicial custody.

The police said they regularly stopped trucks carrying illegally quarried sand and stones from the outskirts of the city at night and sought money from drivers for safe passage. When the gang beat up a truck driver at Thailagere for refusing to pay, villagers surrounded them and called police.
