: It’s a 100-year old not-for-profit institution, but with alternative health therapy fast gaining importance, Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala (AVS) has become the foremost exponent of the ayurvedic school of medicine not only in India, but across the world. And, with executive health also increasingly becoming the focus of attention in corporates, AVS has also gradually become a refuge for a large number of people, from all strata of society, including the rich and the famous.

100 years back, in a small hamlet in Kottakkal, near Kozhikode in northern Kerala, it was decided to revive the ancient therapeutic system of Ayurveda. Modesty and an uncompromising stand on principles has helped it go places with the healing touch and also perhaps limited its spread beyond the frontiers of the country.

Says chief physician and managing trustee Aryavidyan PK Warrier who recently was in Spain for treating a senior member of the royal family, ‘‘A historical necessity, namely resurrection of traditional knowledge, was fulfiled a century ago. When its founder Vaidyaratnam PS Varier started the AVS, there were two major declarations - AVS will treat patients with care and the medicines prepared without any fraud. This has been the reason for the success and living up to their expectations for all these 100 years should help us sustain this trust in the coming years.’’

AVS has played a pivotal role in spreading the concept of ayurveda as a medical science, fighting all odds. In the past, it was looked down with contempt. The dearth of good physicians and the complex procedures in preparation of medicines and treatment added to the perils of the system.

It was in such a backdrop that the founders of this institution started the organisation that has branched out to every nook and corner of the State besides many major cities...
