New Delhi, Aug 25: Although tempted by Delhi’s swanky metro rail system, the West Bengal government has decided to stay Swadeshi while carrying out the work in Kolkata.
For the proposed 22-km expansion, the Left government had been keen on working with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). However, it decided against this after the DMRC estimates proved too high. The fact that the DMRC would be importing most of the equipment required for the metro rail also proved to be a big deterrent.
Rail Bhavan officials said they had received a letter from the West Bengal government asking them to evaluate the project and carry out the construction.
The state had earlier asked the DMRC to prepare a detailed project report. It was also interested in asking the corporation to construct the east-west corridor of the metro along the lines of Delhi metro.
It was to have standard-gauge tracks, modern signaling technique and all kinds of passenger amenities.
Sources said, the state after considering the cost of the project decided to revert to the railway ministry, which had constructed the earlier phase.
