Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) run King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Parel will be the first among Government run hospitals in the city to carry out liver transplants from this year.
"Before starting liver transplants, we need the necessary infrastructure for it. The hospital has to upgrade its infrastructure. It will have two operation theaters dedicated for liver transplant as well as a special ward," Dean, KEM, Dr Sanjay Oak said.
Once the infrastructure is ready, liver transplant is likely to start before the year ends, he said.
In order to kick start its operations, KEM has sent a team of 30 medical professionals on six months of training to New Delhi.
"The team comprising doctors, nurses, anaesthetists, technicians and counselors from KEM were in Delhi for six months to learn surgical expertise, intra operative anesthesia and even post operative care," said Oak.
The cost of liver transplant is high at private hospitals so a common man cannot afford it, said Oak, adding that, "A private hospital charges anywhere between Rs 25 to Rs 30 lakh whereas the over all cost at a BMC hospital would come out to around Rs five-seven lakh."
