Kalyan Singh was sworn in as the Governor of Rajasthan on Thursday amidst slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ by his supporters at the Raj Bhawan.

Later, when asked about such sloganeering while taking oath to a constitutional post, Singh, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said, “Why, what is wrong about it? It is a matter of faith.” The sloganeering was condemned by senior Congress leaders, who said a constitutional post should not be given a “communal colour”.

Singh became the 20th Governor of the state, taking over from Ram Naik, who was assigned additional charge after UPA government appointee Margaret Alva completed her term last month.

After taking oath, he praised Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and said it was like coming to his “sister’s home”. “Main bada bhai hoon jo chhoti behen ke ghar aaya hai. (I am elder brother who has come to his younger sister’s home). Vasundhara Raje is a very hardworking and able chief minister, who works for the development of all sections of society,” Singh said. “I will not cross the ‘Lakshman rekha’. I have not come to work as a competitor but as a supporter.” Singh said the Governor’s office will no longer address him as ‘His Excellency’, doing away with the colonial practice. He recalled his days as the UP CM when he had renamed the public meetings from ‘Janta Durbar’ to ‘Janta Darshan’.
