The family of Himachal Congress general secretary Ram Kumar Choudhary, who won from Doon Assembly constituency in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, has told the police that he was “busy’’ in thanking people who voted for him and could not join the probe into the murder case of Jyoti, a Hoshiarpur girl who was found killed in the city last month.
A police party comprising Assistant Commissioner of Police (headquarters) Virendar Singh, Sector 5 SHO Ajay Singh, police personnel from the crime investigation agency (CIA) of Panchkula and Baddi police station visited his house on December 15. But they were told by the family members that he had gone out to thank people for voting for him and could not join the investigation. Later, the police contacted Ram Kumar’s brother, Madan Singh, who told them he “is too busy to join police questioning now”.
Police officers, however, said Ram Kumar’s family had assured them that he would join the investigations. They said the Congress leader could not be arrested as of now his direct role in the murder case had not been established. He only appeared in one of the wedding photographs of the family.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Panchkula, Parul Kush Jain said the complaint by the father of the deceased was being looked into.
However, police officers said Ram Kumar’s name did not figure in the FIR at Sector 5 police station and the death of the girl had been “attributed to an unidentified person”.
Twenty-seven days after the murder, police are looking to probe some key details in the case: how Gurmeet Singh, Ram Kumar’s relative, became friends with Jyoti and used to call her and even had introduced the Congress leader to the family of Jyoti at the wedding of her sister.
ACP Virendar Singh said “we are trying to find such details which will only be revealed during the course of investigation”. Police said that Gurmeet Singh was a supplier of sand and gravel and was related to the Congress leader.
Jyoti’s father is a tailor while Ram Kumar’s family runs liquor and transportation business. His father, Lajja Ram, is the erstwhile MLA from Baddi.
However, the victim’s family has filed a police complaint that the Congress leader has threatened them not to pursue the case. Jyoti’s father, Buti Ram, said he had approached the police, but they had not done anything.
The Sector 5 SHO said the police were “trying to
