Jyoti murder case: HP Cong leader wins, kin say too busy to join probe

The family of Himachal Congress general secretary Ram Kumar Choudhary, who won from Doon Assembly constituency in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, has told the police that he was “busy’’ in thanking people who voted for him and could not join the probe into the murder case of Jyoti, a Hoshiarpur girl who was found killed in the city last month.

A police party comprising Assistant Commissioner of Police (headquarters) Virendar Singh, Sector 5 SHO Ajay Singh, police personnel from the crime investigation agency (CIA) of Panchkula and Baddi police station visited his house on December 15. But they were told by the family members that he had gone out to thank people for voting for him and could not join the investigation. Later, the police contacted Ram Kumar’s brother, Madan Singh, who told them he “is too busy to join police questioning now”.

Police officers, however, said Ram Kumar’s family had assured them that he would join the investigations. They said the Congress leader could not be arrested as of now his direct role in the murder case had not been established. He only appeared in one of the wedding photographs of the family.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Panchkula, Parul Kush Jain said the complaint by the father of the deceased was being looked into.

However, police officers said Ram Kumar’s name did not figure in the FIR at Sector 5 police station and the death of the girl had been “attributed to an unidentified person”.
