Mumbai: India's coffee exports fell 17 per cent in the first five months of 2009 as higher Indian prices amid the global economic downturn kept buyers away, an official from the Coffee Board said on Monday.
"Exports have been dipping due to the ongoing slowdown and a rise in Indian rates, due to the low stock situation, which is pushing away international buyers," the official who did not wish to be identified said.
Total exports were 80,914 tonnes between January and May, compared with 97,052 tonnes in the year-ago period.
India's coffee exports fell to 219,583 tonnes in 2008 from 220,110 tonnes in the previous year.
The country produces only 4.5 per cent of the world's coffee, but exports 70-80 per cent of its output.
