A senior Congress leader has taken exception to Jairam Ramesh's comments on Rahul Gandhi saying they have come at a wrong time and will go against the party in the current Assembly polls.

"....Modi can never become PM of India & Jairam is sadly mistaken", Anil Shastri said on the microblogging site Twitter.

Shastri, in another tweet, said Jairam's statement has come at a "wrong time. It may go against us in the current assembly elections."

In a media interview, Ramesh had remarked that his frustration was that Rahul Gandhi was too forward looking about building the party in the long term when facing the immediate short term challenge of elections.

Noting that Rahul Gandhi is working on a vision for the party and all Congressmen must support him, Shastri said "Jairam shouldn't be bothered about Modi who is just an illusion."

Besides, he wondered as to why should Jairam be frustrated with Rahul Gandhi working on long term strategy or that he is too forward looking ?

The tweets from Shastri came as Information and Broadcasting Minister and party leader Manish Tewari brushed aside Ramesh's suggestion that Rahul Gandhi was focused more on party's long term future, terming it as his "personal" opinion.

"That opinion of Jairam Ramesh is his personal respectable opinion. As far as Rahul Gandhi and Congress are concerned, we take every election seriously---be it big or small," Tewari told reporters.

BJP had latched on to Ramesh's comments as an admission of defeat.

BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said, "Practically even before starting the battle, they have conceded defeat."
