Online apparel retailer Jabong today hosted a design hackathon, which saw product designers, engineers and logistics players come together to work on existing courier bags to make it more efficient and improve the last mile customer experience.

The idea behind the design hack emerged after a customer tagged Jabong with other industry players in a tweet, which commented on the state of the courier bags of delivery boys carrying online shopping packages.

"Jabong responded immediately with a suggestion to host a design hack. One like never before in India to bring together several creative minds to literally disrupt this very courier bag and emerge with something more efficient, user friendly," Jabong co-founder Praveen Sinha told PTI.

Last mile delivery is important and Jabong's intention is to evolve the entire ecosystem and create more customer wows, he added.

"This hack is a step towards crowd-sourcing innovation to evolve the e-commerce ecosystem and at the same time enhance the working conditions across India's supply chain and logistics," Sinha said.

Courier delivery executives carry large bags which weigh from 15-30 kg throughout the day and the bags at present are sturdy, weather proof, but not efficient or easy to manage, he said.

The goal is to come up with two solutions to the problem by putting together 2-3 design teams for over a 6 hour process to emerge with a new design prototype, Sinha added.

Courier services are an almost 'not thought of' part of the entire e-commerce chain and Jabong intends to lead the change here as well with amazing ideas and innovations, he said.
