J&K Grand Mufti slams CM support to all-girl rock band
“Such non-serious acts are the first step towards destruction,” Mufti Bashir-ud-din said. “For some girls this mirage (music) is the elixir of life. They are on the wrong path and they should watch their steps.” The band has stopped live performances in the Valley for some time following threats and criticism on social networking sites.
The Mufti, who heads the self-styled Supreme Court of Islamic Shariet, is considered close to the ruling National Conference. “Our daughters can play an important role in building a society. But when people stray from the straight path and are shackled in ominous fetters of music, it would be our misfortune,” he said.
The Hurriyat hardliners too have disapproved of the Omar’s support to the rock band. “Though in civilised world, there is no reason to stop something by force, every society has some moral, cultural and religious values. It is the responsibility of every citizen to respect these values,” said Ayaz Akbar, Hurriyat hardline spokesman.
He said the Hurriyat is not surprised by CM’s support to the band as his family has since long “disassociated itself from the Islamic and ethical values”. They, however, condemned the threats given to band group.
