Intel’s new Atom processor to give low-cost computing a fillip

The world’s largest chip maker, Intel, has launched the latest version of its Atom processor, designed especially for low-cost computing products like netbooks and nettops. The new processor promises better performance than its predecessor, which was launched by the company in June 2008, along with consuming 20% less power.

The processor was earlier codenamed Pine Trail and consists of Intel Atom N450 processor and Intel NM10 Express chipset. “Intel’s Atom processor has fuelled an entirely new category of computing.We’re excited to be delivering the next-generation Atom platform as we head into a second phase of growth, powering new system designs with better performance, smaller form factor and better battery life,” said David M McCloskey, product marketing manager, Intel (Asia Pacific) Platform.

McCloskey added that the company has over 80 design wins to-date for the new Atom platform from laptop and desktop manufacturers like ASUS, Acer, Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba, Samsung and Fujitsu among others. Products with the new Intel processor will be available from January.

Though the company has not announced the price of the product, it is believed that there will be no major difference between the rate of the products that are build on the old processor and those with Intel Atom N450.

The new chips allow integration of graphics and memory controller into the CPU compared to the previous version in which the graphics and memory controller resided outside the CPU. According to technology analysts this could be the selling point of the device as users can do a lot more graphics
