SummaryThis year we are poised to produce an all time record 263.2 mt of foodgrain.

India is expected to reap a record harvest of 263.20 million tonne (mt) of grains in the current crop year through June as good monsoon showers led to higher planting. “Agriculture in India today is at its best, with a growth rate of 4.6% recorded during the second quarter of this fiscal. This (crop) year, we are poised to produce an all-time record 263.2 mt of foodgrain,” agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said on Monday. India — the world's second-largest grower of wheat and rice — produced a record 259.29 mt of grains in 2011-12, although the output level dropped to 255.36 mt last crop year due to initial rough weather. The agriculture and allied sectors are expected to grow 4.6% in the 2013-14 fiscal, compared with 1.4% a year before, providing major impetus to overall economic growth, especially in view of weak performances by the industrial sector. The minister said higher grain output has provided necessary confidence to the government to launch the National Food Security Act.
