Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Friday said a ministerial panel will consider a proposal to levy import tax on wheat.

He also said the slow progress of monsoon rains would not hit farm output.

India's monsoon rains, vital for farm output gains after last year's drought, were 24 percent below normal in the past week and unlikely to rebound in the week ahead, the weather office said on Thursday, raising fears of crop loss.

Which news was Govt giving in India about the Bumper wheat crops around March 2010 ? Did the wheat Traders placed all that on reserve to CASH IN on the low market like U.S. Goldman Sash did to the World Red-wheat commodities out of Minnesota,U.S. and caused starvation all over the world??

One more pawar trick

Scanty monsson with a possible shortfall in wheat output should have led the government to import more wheat and flood the markets so that the 'aam aadmi' would at least be able to eat his roti--since 'dal' is already beyond his reach, thanks to Pawar and his masters- the hoarders, traders et al, but now Pawar has ensured that even imported wheat would cost more. Every single policy of this government is anti-people and pro traders that has led to unprecedented price rise. In any country, ministers and officials responsible for such a situation would have resigned or thrown out. The only response to price rise is yet more hopes and promises that prices would come down soon--whitout even saying when, how, by how much. No wonder, naxals and others are proliferating. The urgent need is to import food from anywhere and everywhere to bring the prices down with little or no import duty.
