India in line to be world hockey hub

Even a week-long break and an inconsequential match couldn't keeps the crowds away as close to 7000 spectators turned up to watch the Delhi Waveriders take on the Uttar Pradesh Wizards on the final day of the Hockey India League's group stage. Evidently encouraged by the turnouts across the five venues, International Hockey Federation (FIH) president Leandro Negre, who was present at the National Stadium in the capital on Thursday, rolled out an ambitious proposal which will bring more hockey to the country: A club world cup.

Negre, who has attended the last few HIL matches, said the proposal, if accepted, will have eight top club from across the world playing a knockout competition a week before the second edition of the HIL. "The FIH is planning to hold the Club World Cup in India. It is too early to say anything about the event, but my personal wish is to start the tournament next year. The proposal is still under discussion, and we'll make an announcement shortly," Negre said.

The latest move is consistent with FIH's recent efforts to hard-sell hockey to Indian sponsors and fans. Unlike football's Club World Cup, which has different host nations every year, the proposed hockey tournament will be played in India for the first four years.
