India, Bangla to ink extradition treaty in Jan
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde met his Bangladesh counterpart Dr Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir where the two leaders agreed to finalise the extradition treaty, which is “under consideration by both governments”.
Union Home Ministry officials confirmed the arrest of two terror suspects wanted by Bangladesh against whom a red corner notice was issued. One person, Sazzad Hossain Khan, was recently arrested from Amritsar and a process is under way to deport him to Dhaka, said officials. Shinde also stressed on taking action against leaders of the Indian Insurgent Groups (IIG) reportedly staying in Bangladesh.
“It was agreed that Revised Travel Agreement (RTA) as well as the extradition treaty will be finalized and signed in January, 2013, during the proposed visit of Indian Home Minister to Dhaka,” said a joint statement issued after Shinde met his Bangladeshi counterpart.
The statement said “both sides noted that the action was being taken for repatriation of sentenced prisoners to either country under the agreement for transfer of sentenced prisoners. Both sides agreed to allow development work within 150 yards of zero line.” The two countries also agreed not to resort to firing unless fired upon or attacked by terrorists or armed criminals, the statement said, while expressing regret over deaths and loss of life on the border.
