In Gujarat, from former cops to corporate execs

The sixth edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit saw former police chiefs of the state in a different role last week — as senior employees of corporate groups Essar, Reliance Industries and Adani, which have huge investments in the state and pledged more at the meet.

Shabbi Khandwawala, who was Gujarat’s first Muslim DGP, heads the corporate security department of the entire Essar Group and is based in Mumbai since he retired in November 2010.

Khandwawala, who was here for the January 11-13 summit, said, “I am not directly involved in the summit. I am in charge of the corporate security of the company (and) the company’s top men are in the state to make investments.”

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries absorbed DGP K R Kaushik soon after his retirement in September 2008. Kaushik had been Ahmedabad police commissioner soon after the riots in 2002, and during the controversial police encounters of Samirkhan Pathan in 2002 and Ishrat Jahan in 2004. In 2007, he had been made DGP by the Election Commission replacing P C Pande.

Kaushik, who has been with RIL for three years, said he was an advisor and his job was to provide “corporate security solutions” and do “security audits”. Kaushik works out of Ahmedabad and Jamnagar.

P C Pande, who was accused of inaction during the 2002 riots as the Ahmedabad police commissioner but given a clean chit by the Supreme Court-appointed SIT, retired in March 2009. He was director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau then and continues
